What is involved in genomic testing?

You will meet a genetic health professional to discuss any questions you may have about genomic testing. At this time, you can provide consent to continue with GoExplore™.

In 8-12 weeks, you will meet the genetic health professional again to learn about your genomic testing and pharmacogenomics results. At this time, you will also be provided with a copy of all your test results. At this stage, you may be advised to seek additional specialist advice based on findings in the assessment.

Can genomic testing affect my insurance?

Under Australian law, your health insurance will not be affected by your decision to have genomic testing, or by any result of genomic testing. However, genomic testing can have implications for your ability to obtain risk-rated insurance policies, including life insurance, disability insurance and income protection insurance.

More information on life insurance products and genomic testing can be found at www.genetics.edu.au (Fact sheet 20)

Customers from outside of Australia should obtain advice about the implications of genomic testing for insurance in their home country.

What genetic conditions does GoExplore cover?

GoExplore™ assesses your genetic risk of developing 31 cancers, 13 heart conditions and 9 other inherited conditions. At this stage, we are only reporting genetic variants associated with conditions that can be treated, managed, monitored or prevented.

As medical and scientific knowledge increases, the test will be expanded to include additional conditions. Your genomic information can be reanalysed in the future upon request from your doctor (additional fees may apply).

What happens to my genomic information after the test is complete?

In accordance with Australian pathology accreditation requirements, we will continue to securely store your genomic data. We protect your genomic data as confidential health information. We work only with high security data management providers. Your genomic information is stored for the period required by law and generally accepted pathology practice.

Your personal information (including your genomic data) is stored in accordance with the Genome. One Privacy Policy available here.
